Description: At Pennymuir the ramparts and entrances of two marching camps are particularly well preserved. Close to what is now the border, they are a reminder of the many occasions on which Roman legions marched north from York and Hadrian's Wall to reach their bases at Trimontium and further north. It was a major route into the area from the 1st to 4th centuries. Dere Street itself can be walked from Pennymuir to Whitton Edge and onwards.

How to get there:
By car: From Morebattle, 7 miles south of Kelso, take the road signposted Hownam. Go on through Hownam and follow the minor road south. Turn right after the Swanlaws cattle grid, along the road signposted Camptown. The camps are to the right of the road from Pennymuir Hall down to the Towford.
Dere Street comes up from the ford and passes along the side of Pennymuir Hall before going straight on across country to Whitton.
